Jonathan Smith (Michael Landon) is an angel on probation, whose mission is to return to Earth and help those in need. When he meets embittered ex-cop Mark Gordon (Victor French), Jonathan reveals that he's an angel, restoring Mark's faith in humanity.
Mark offers to help Jonathan get his wings and becomes his loyal sidekick. The two begin travelling the country as itinerant workers, receiving assignments from "the Boss" (an unseen associate only Jonathan can communicate with), with their mission being to deliver love, understanding and humility to the people they encountered. Imparting hard-earned wisdom and a dash of humour, these two gentle souls continue to perform everyday miracles, guiding the lost and suffering back toward the highway to heaven.
