Set against the sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France, he is soon caught up in the war, serving on both sides before finding himself in no man's land.
But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist in the British Army, he embarks on a dangerous mission to find the horse and bring him home to Devon.
